The airport was officially decommissioned and removed from the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) sometime between the late 2000s and early 2010s. The last known official publication listing the aerodrome (under its former identifier CSJ3) was in 2007. The closure was likely a gradual process rather than a single event.
The closure was primarily due to economic reasons, a common fate for small, rural aerodromes. Key factors included: high costs of maintenance and liability insurance relative to its use, declining general aviation traffic, and the lack of funding to maintain or upgrade the facility. It was no longer financially viable for the local municipality or owner to keep it operational for the limited traffic it served.
The airport is permanently closed and the site has been fully returned to agricultural use. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows the land is now a pasture or hayfield. The faint, linear outline of the former northwest/southeast runway is still visible on the landscape, but all airport infrastructure, such as markings, windsocks, or buildings, has been removed.
Eastend Airport, officially known as Eastend (South) Aerodrome (former Transport Canada LID: CSJ3), was a small, unpaved airstrip serving the town of Eastend and surrounding agricultural communities in southwestern Saskatchewan. It featured a single turf runway (13/31) approximately 2,600 feet long. Its operations were modest and consisted mainly of:
- **General Aviation:** Used by private pilots for recreational flying and transportation.
- **Agricultural Aviation:** Supported local farmers with services like crop dusting and spraying.
- **Utility and Emergency Services:** Provided a vital landing area for occasional air ambulance flights, government services, and charter aircraft, connecting the remote community to larger centers.
There are no known plans, discussions, or prospects for reopening the Eastend Airport. The economic and logistical challenges that led to its closure still exist. The land has been repurposed, and re-establishing an airport would require significant capital investment and a demonstrated need for aviation services that is not currently present in the community.
