Approximately late 1990s to early 2000s. An exact official date is not readily available, but its closure coincides with major expansions of the Port of Halifax's container terminal and the consolidation of military aviation assets.
The heliport was closed for two primary reasons: 1) The commercial expansion of the Port of Halifax's South End Container Terminal, which required the valuable waterfront real estate for container storage and crane operations. 2) The consolidation of Canadian Armed Forces maritime helicopter operations at the larger, purpose-built 12 Wing Shearwater heliport (CYAW) across the harbour, which made the small dockside pad redundant.
The site of the former heliport has been completely integrated into the PSA Halifax South End Container Terminal. The land where the helipad was located is now an active industrial zone used for stacking shipping containers, marshalling trucks, and other port-related logistics. There are no visible remnants or markings of the heliport.
The Halifax (South Battery) Heliport was a military facility operated by the Canadian Armed Forces, primarily serving the Royal Canadian Navy (Maritime Command). Its key significance was its strategic location directly on the Halifax dockside, providing immediate access to naval vessels. It was used for utility and transport flights, facilitating the rapid movement of personnel, essential parts, and light cargo between the shore and ships moored in the harbour. The heliport was a common sight for operations involving the CH-124 Sea King helicopter, supporting ship-based helicopter air detachments (HELAIRDETs) as they prepared for deployment or returned from sea.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The land is now critical infrastructure for one of Canada's most important international container ports. The current environment, with its massive gantry cranes, high stacks of containers, and constant heavy vehicle traffic, makes the site entirely unsuitable and unsafe for any aviation activities. All military helicopter requirements in the region are fully served by 12 Wing Shearwater.
