Circa late 2000s to early 2010s. The airport was listed in official Canadian aviation publications like the Canada Flight Supplement in the mid-2000s but was subsequently removed. Satellite imagery shows the runway was still relatively clear in 2006 but had become significantly overgrown by 2012, indicating a gradual abandonment and official closure within that period.
The closure was due to economic reasons and a decline in its operational necessity. The airstrip was primarily used for specific government functions (forestry). As these programs were completed, scaled back, or centralized to larger, better-equipped airports like Miramichi (CYCH), the cost of maintaining this remote, single-purpose airstrip was no longer justified. It fell into disuse and was officially decommissioned.
The airport is completely abandoned and has reverted to nature. The former 3,000-foot gravel runway is no longer visible at ground level and is heavily overgrown with mature shrubs and young trees, though its linear outline can still be distinguished in satellite photos. There are no remaining buildings or aviation infrastructure on the site. The land is now essentially a clearing in the forest, potentially used by locals for recreational ATV or snowmobile use.
Renous Airport was a utility airstrip owned and operated by the provincial government, specifically the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources. Its primary and most significant role was as a forward operating base for aerial spraying operations, particularly during the extensive campaigns to combat the spruce budworm infestation in the region's vast forests. It also supported forest fire patrol and suppression aircraft. It was a functional, unpaved strip crucial for provincial resource management but was never a public airport for general aviation or commercial traffic.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Renous Airport. The cost to clear the extensive overgrowth, rebuild the runway surface, and re-certify the site would be substantial. Given that the original operational need no longer exists in the same capacity, and other regional airports can serve modern needs, there is no economic or logistical incentive for its revival. The airport is considered permanently closed.
