Approximately between 2002 and 2005. The aerodrome was listed in the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) in 2002 but was subsequently removed from publications by 2005, indicating its official decommissioning within that timeframe.
Primarily economic reasons. As a small, public-use turf airstrip operated by the Town of Ponteix, the operational costs, maintenance, and liability likely outweighed its benefits and usage by the local community. With declining use, it was more economically viable to decommission the airport and return the land to its primary regional use, agriculture.
The airport is permanently closed and no longer exists. The land at its former location has been fully converted back to agricultural use. Current satellite imagery shows the area as a cultivated farm field, with no visible remnants of the former runway or any aviation-related structures.
Ponteix Airport was a small, local general aviation aerodrome. Its significance was tied directly to the community it served, providing a basic landing strip for private pilots, recreational flying, and potentially agricultural aircraft (crop dusters). When active, it was listed as having a single turf runway (12/30) measuring approximately 2500 feet long by 75 feet wide. It was a VFR-only (Visual Flight Rules) facility with no significant infrastructure like hangars or fuel services, serving as a simple point of access for light aircraft to the Ponteix area.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Ponteix Airport. The land appears to be privately owned and is actively farmed. Given the economic reasons for its original closure and the lack of a compelling need for a new airfield in the small community, the prospect of it being re-established is effectively zero.
