The exact date of closure is not officially documented. However, based on historical context, the airport likely fell into disuse during the 1970s and was officially abandoned by the 1980s or 1990s. It is not listed in Canadian aviation publications from the early 2000s onwards.
The closure was primarily due to economic and demographic shifts. The completion of the Robert Campbell Highway (Yukon Highway 4) in 1968 provided reliable, year-round ground transportation to the area. This new road access led to the gradual relocation of the population from the remote Little Salmon Village to the larger, better-serviced community of Carmacks. With its primary user base gone and a superior transportation alternative available, the airstrip became obsolete and was abandoned.
The site is an abandoned and unmaintained airstrip. Satellite imagery shows a clearly defined dirt/gravel runway that is overgrown with vegetation and in a state of disrepair. There are no airport facilities, markings, or buildings remaining. The land is part of the traditional territory of the Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation and is not used for any formal purpose, though it may be accessed informally by locals.
Little Salmon Airport was a small, remote airstrip that served as a vital lifeline for the Northern Tutchone community at Little Salmon Village before the construction of the highway. Operations consisted exclusively of general aviation and bush planes. It was critical for the delivery of mail, food, and essential supplies, as well as for providing access for medical services, government officials, and supporting regional activities like trapping and mineral exploration. Its primary significance was connecting an isolated northern community to the outside world.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Little Salmon Airport. The regional aviation needs are met by the nearby Carmacks Airport (CEX4), which is located in the area's main population center and is maintained. Given the established highway network and the consolidation of the local population in Carmacks, there is no logistical or economic justification to restore the abandoned Little Salmon airstrip.
