Approximately late 1990s to early 2000s. The exact date is not officially recorded, but aviation charts and satellite imagery indicate it ceased operations around this period as the land was prepared for new development.
Urban expansion and commercial redevelopment. The airport was located on the northwestern edge of Moose Jaw, and as the city expanded, the land became highly valuable for commercial use. The site was sold and subsequently developed into a major retail hub. The closure was economic and logistical, driven by the city's growth, not by an accident or military conversion. The presence of the Moose Jaw Municipal Airport (CJW4) provided a nearby alternative for general aviation traffic.
The site has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped. It is now a major commercial and retail power centre known as Thatcher Drive Crossing. The land formerly occupied by the runways and hangars now hosts large-format stores such as a Walmart Supercentre, Canadian Tire, Sobeys Liquor, as well as numerous smaller retail outlets, restaurants, and banks. There are no remaining physical traces of the former airport.
Moose Jaw Westair was a privately owned general aviation airport that served as a key facility for the local flying community for many years. Its primary operator was Westair Aviation Ltd., which provided flight training, air charter services, aircraft maintenance, and fuel. The airport was crucial for private pilots, flying clubs, and agricultural aviation (crop dusting) in the region. It featured two unpaved (gravel/turf) runways in an 'X' configuration to accommodate varying wind directions. It played a significant role in fostering local aviation, distinct from the large-scale military operations at nearby CFB Moose Jaw.
Zero. The prospect of reopening the airport at this location is non-existent due to the complete commercial redevelopment of the land. The site is permanently repurposed, and any future aviation needs for the city are handled by the Moose Jaw Municipal Airport (CJW4).
