Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Circa mid-to-late 2000s. An exact date is not publicly documented, but the heliport was delisted from official Canadian aviation publications during this period. Its decommissioning likely coincided with the extensive restoration of Point Pleasant Park following the devastation of Hurricane Juan in September 2003, which provided an opportunity to formally convert the site to full public use.

Reason for Closure

The closure was due to a combination of operational redundancy and land-use changes. The primary military helicopter base for the region, 12 Wing Shearwater, is located just across the harbour and is fully equipped to handle all military aviation needs. The South Battery heliport, a small auxiliary pad within a major public park, became non-essential for the Department of National Defence (DND). Its closure allowed the land to be fully integrated into Point Pleasant Park for public recreational use.

Current Status

The site is now a public parking lot and scenic viewpoint at the southern tip of Point Pleasant Park, often referred to as the 'lower parking lot' or 'Point Pleasant Park parking'. The circular asphalt pad of the former heliport is still clearly visible, but all aviation markings have been removed. It is a popular destination for locals and tourists to park their vehicles while they walk the park's trails or to enjoy the panoramic views of the Halifax Harbour entrance, McNabs Island, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Historical Significance

The Halifax (South Battery) Heliport was a military facility operated by the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND). Its name derives from its location at the site of a historic artillery battery, part of the extensive Halifax Defence Complex. When active, it served as a convenient, secondary landing zone for CFB Halifax. Its primary operations involved logistical and transport flights, such as moving key personnel, VIPs, or small, time-sensitive cargo between the main naval dockyard, DND headquarters, and the primary airbase at Shearwater. The helicopters that most frequently used the pad were the Royal Canadian Air Force's CH-124 Sea Kings. The heliport consisted of a single, paved landing pad and was not equipped with hangars, fuel, or extensive support facilities.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero known plans or prospects for reopening this heliport. The location is now fully established as an integral part of Point Pleasant Park, a federally-owned historic site and one of Halifax's most popular public parks. Re-establishing an active heliport in such a heavily used recreational and ecologically sensitive area would face insurmountable public opposition, as well as significant safety and logistical challenges. The Canadian Armed Forces have no operational requirement for the site, making its reopening for aviation purposes exceptionally unlikely.
