Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 2010-2012. The airport was listed in the Canada Flight Supplement in the mid-2000s but was delisted in subsequent editions. Satellite imagery analysis shows the runway was still distinct in 2009 but had become overgrown and repurposed by 2014, suggesting aviation operations ceased in the intervening period.

Reason for Closure

The airport was a small, privately owned turf airstrip. While the exact reason is not officially documented, the closure was most likely due to economic or personal reasons of the owner. This is a common fate for private airfields, which may close due to rising maintenance costs, sale of the property, or the owner's retirement from aviation. The land was subsequently converted to agricultural use (hay field), which supports this conclusion.

Current Status

The site is currently used for agriculture. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows a large field where the airport once was. The faint outline of the former east-west runway is still visible from the air, but it is completely overgrown with grass and appears to be maintained as a hay field. All aviation-specific infrastructure, such as hangars, markings, and windsocks, has been removed. The land has been fully repurposed and is no longer recognizable as an airport from the ground.

Historical Significance

Douglastown Airport was a private general aviation aerodrome serving the local Miramichi area. Its significance was primarily local, providing a base for recreational flying. According to aviation records, it was operated by 'A & R Savoie' and featured a single turf runway (10/28) approximately 2,600 feet long. It handled light, single-engine aircraft such as Cessnas and Pipers. The airport was not used for commercial or scheduled flights but was a valuable asset for the private pilot(s) who operated it, representing a personal passion for aviation common in rural Canada.

Reopening Prospects

None. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Douglastown Airport. The land has been converted to another use, and the nearby Miramichi Airport (CYCH) adequately serves the region's aviation needs. Re-establishing an airport on this site would require significant investment and a demonstrated need, neither of which currently exists.
