Approximately between 2008 and 2011. The heliport was officially listed as 'Closed Permanently' in FAA data cycles during this period. The exact date is not publicly documented, but its closure coincides with the consolidation of helicopter operations in the region.
Economic and operational consolidation. The heliport's operator, Air Logistics (a subsidiary of Offshore Logistics, which became Bristow Group in 2006), consolidated its numerous smaller heliports in the Louisiana Gulf Coast region into a new, large, state-of-the-art 'super-base'. This new facility, the Bristow Galliano Heliport located at the South Lafourche Airport (KLIX), offered greater efficiency, centralized maintenance, modern passenger terminals, and the ability to handle a higher volume of flights. The closure of smaller bases like 9LA3 was a direct result of this strategic shift to a centralized operational model.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is no longer recognizable as a heliport. Satellite imagery of the coordinates (29.116446, -90.199746) shows that the land has been absorbed into the adjacent C-Port 1 marine terminal facility within Port Fourchon. The original helipads and support structures have been removed and replaced with industrial buildings, equipment storage yards, and docking facilities for offshore supply vessels (OSVs). The land is now used for maritime and logistical support for the offshore industry, reflecting the port's continued growth and evolution.
The Air Logistics (Fourchon) Heliport was a vital component of the infrastructure supporting the U.S. offshore oil and gas industry in the Gulf of Mexico for several decades. As a base for Air Logistics/Bristow, one of the world's largest helicopter operators, it was a primary departure and arrival point for thousands of offshore workers. Operations consisted of transporting personnel for crew changes, moving light cargo and equipment, and conducting emergency medical evacuations to and from offshore platforms, drilling rigs, and production facilities. The heliport played a direct and critical role in the daily functioning and expansion of energy exploration and production in the Gulf.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening this heliport. The site has been fully repurposed for industrial maritime use. Furthermore, the operator's strategic consolidation into the nearby Galliano 'super-base' (KLIX) makes the need for a separate, smaller heliport at this specific location obsolete. The land is now more valuable in its current role supporting marine terminal operations within the busy Port Fourchon.
