Approximately late 2017. The FAA officially charted the airport as 'Closed Indefinitely' in its 22 September 2017 chart supplement and it was subsequently listed as 'Closed Permanently'.
Economic and land development. The airport was situated on land acquired for the large-scale 'Pointe Vista' resort and residential community on Lake Texoma. The airport's land was repurposed as part of the master plan for this new development, which includes a hotel, golf course, marina, and housing. The airport was decommissioned to make way for these other, more profitable, components of the resort project.
The airport is permanently closed and decommissioned. The runway and associated facilities have been abandoned and are in a state of disrepair. Satellite imagery shows the asphalt runway is still visible but is cracked, weathered, and being reclaimed by nature. The land is part of the active Pointe Vista development project, with construction of homes and other amenities ongoing in the surrounding area. The former airport grounds are slated for future phases of this residential and resort development.
The airport was a small, private-use general aviation airfield. It was never a public or commercial airport and did not handle scheduled flights. Its primary function was to provide air access for property owners and visitors to the previous resort community and the Lake Texoma area. Its 'Margaritaville Airport' name was a relatively recent and informal designation tied to the new developers' branding for the Pointe Vista resort, which includes a 'Margaritaville' themed section. Prior to this, it was known as Pointe Vista Airport. Operations were limited to light, single-engine aircraft. It held no significant military or commercial historical importance.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening. The airport has been officially closed at the owner's request, and the land has been fully integrated into the master plan for the Pointe Vista development. Its reopening is not feasible as the land is being repurposed for residential and recreational use.
