The heliport was officially deactivated on August 22, 2013. FAA records from that period list its status as 'Closed Indefinitely'.
The closure was an administrative and operational decision by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The heliport was deemed unnecessary for the facility's function as an outpatient clinic. Critical emergency patients requiring air transport would typically be flown directly to a full-service hospital with a trauma center, such as the nearby Health First's Holmes Regional Medical Center, rather than an outpatient facility. The costs associated with maintaining, certifying, and insuring a heliport were not justified by its extremely low or non-existent usage.
The site of the former heliport is located on the western side of the Viera VA Health Care Center property. Current satellite imagery shows the area is now an open, maintained lawn. The faint, faded markings of the helipad (a circle with an 'H') are still partially visible in the grass, but the site is otherwise unused and has no aviation infrastructure remaining. The VA clinic itself remains fully operational.
The VA Outpatient Clinic Heliport (66FL) was established in conjunction with the opening of the Viera VA Outpatient Clinic around 2010. Its sole purpose was to provide a landing zone for medical evacuation (medevac) helicopters, enabling the rapid transport of veteran patients to or from the clinic. However, due to the outpatient nature of the facility, the heliport saw very little, if any, actual operational use. Its significance is limited to being a planned logistical component of the clinic that was quickly determined to be superfluous to its mission.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The operational reasons for its closure remain valid, as regional emergency medical protocols direct air ambulances to major hospitals, not outpatient clinics. The facility is permanently closed with no indication of future reactivation.
