The heliport was officially cancelled in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) records and permanently closed on July 20, 2017.
The closure was a result of planned replacement and hospital modernization. The heliport's owner, Washington Hospital, undertook a major expansion project that included the construction of a new, multi-story patient care tower. A modern, larger, and more capable rooftop heliport (ICAO: 99PN, Washington Hospital Heliport) was built on top of this new tower. The Beau Street Heliport (5PS0), which was located on an adjacent parking garage, was consequently rendered obsolete and decommissioned.
The site of the former heliport is the top level of the Washington Hospital parking garage. All aviation infrastructure, including markings, lighting, and the windsock, has been removed. The area is no longer used for aviation and functions simply as the roof of the parking structure. All helicopter operations for the hospital now utilize the new Washington Hospital Heliport (99PN) located directly on the main patient tower, which allows for more efficient and direct patient transfer via elevator to the emergency department, surgical suites, and intensive care units.
For many years, Beau Street Heliport was the primary air medical facility for Washington Hospital and a crucial component of the emergency medical services network in Washington County and the surrounding region. It primarily handled medical evacuation (medevac) flights, operated by services such as STAT MedEvac, to rapidly transport critically injured or ill patients to the hospital's emergency and trauma center. Its existence significantly reduced transport times, which is critical for improving patient outcomes in life-threatening situations. The heliport was located on the roof of the hospital's main parking garage, providing vital air access before the new, more integrated facility was built.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the Beau Street Heliport (5PS0). It has been permanently and intentionally replaced by the superior and modern Washington Hospital Heliport (99PN). The new facility meets current safety standards, can accommodate larger aircraft, and offers far better logistical integration with the hospital's critical care departments, making the old site redundant.
