The airport was officially listed as permanently closed in the FAA's Chart Supplement effective April 20, 2017. The closure followed the death of the airport's owner in February 2017.
The primary reason for the closure was the death of its owner and operator, Jake T. Wilson, on February 1, 2017. Jake's Field was a private-use airport, and its continued operation was dependent on the owner. Following his passing, the airfield was not maintained for aviation use by the new property owners, leading to its official and permanent closure.
The site is currently a private residential and agricultural property. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows that the outline of the north-south turf runway is still clearly visible as a mown grass strip. A building that appears to be the original hangar is also still present at the south end of the former runway. The property is well-maintained, but it is no longer a registered or operational airfield and is used as a private residence with a large lawn where the airstrip was located.
Jake's Field was a classic example of a privately owned, general aviation grass airstrip. For several decades, it served as the personal airfield for its owner and was likely used by a small community of local pilots for recreational flying. It featured a single 2,200 by 100-foot turf runway designated 18/36. The operations were limited to light, single-engine aircraft such as Cessna or Piper models capable of using a short, unpaved runway. The airport held no commercial or military significance but was a personal passion project and a feature of the local aviation landscape in Henry County, Kentucky.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Jake's Field. Reactivating a closed private airport is a complex process that would require the current landowners to have a strong interest in aviation and be willing to navigate the FAA's certification and registration requirements. Given that the airport was closed following the original owner's death, the likelihood of it being reopened is considered extremely low.
