The airport was closed sometime between 1998 and 2004. The last known depiction on a VFR (Visual Flight Rules) aeronautical chart was in 1998. By 2004, it was no longer charted, and an FAA record from 2008 officially listed its status as 'Closed Indefinitely'.
The closure was a private business decision by the owner, Clay's Park Resort. While no single event is cited, the reason was almost certainly economic. The costs of maintenance, insurance, and potential liability for a private airstrip likely outweighed the benefits, especially as the resort sought to use the large, open land for more profitable ventures like large-scale festivals and expanded camping.
The airport is permanently closed and the site has been fully repurposed by the resort, now known as Clay's Resort Jellystone Park. The former runway area is now a large, open grass field. It is primarily used to host major outdoor events, most notably 'The Country Fest' music festival, as well as for overflow parking and other large-scale recreational activities. All aviation infrastructure, such as runway markers or hangars, has been removed.
Clay's RV Airport, previously known as Clay's Airpark, was a private-use airport that served as a unique 'fly-in' destination for the adjacent Clay's Park Resort. Its primary function was to allow pilots of general aviation aircraft to fly directly to the recreational park and campground. The airport consisted of a single turf runway (18/36) measuring approximately 2,500 feet long by 100 feet wide. It catered exclusively to small, private aircraft, offering a rare amenity that combined the hobbies of flying and camping. It was never a public airport or a hub for commercial or military operations.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been successfully and profitably integrated into the resort's primary business model for over two decades. The significant financial, regulatory, and liability hurdles associated with re-establishing an airport make its return to aviation use extremely unlikely.
